Who We Are

A Family Business Serving Boulder County

Torres Sustainable Builders is a family owned general contractor based in Lafayette and working throughout Boulder County. Over 300 projects completed in 24 years in the trade, and the company itself has been running since 2018.

Twenty-four years in the trade and eight years running the business are two different things, and the gap between them matters. The first taught us how a house actually goes together. The second taught us why so many projects go wrong before anyone picks up a tool.

Most of our clients come to us after a bad experience with another contractor. Work that started before permits cleared. A bid that moved. A crew that disappeared for two weeks with the kitchen torn out. We hear the same handful of stories often enough that they stopped being surprising, and they are the reason our process looks the way it does.

We are not the cheapest builder in the county, and we do not try to be. We take on a limited number of projects at a time so each one gets real attention rather than a crew split three ways across the Front Range.

Where We Work

Building Across Boulder County

Boulder County is not one place to build in. It is a dozen jurisdictions with their own rules, sitting on ground that behaves differently from one lot to the next.

Lafayette, Louisville, Superior, Erie, Boulder, and Broomfield each run their own building division. A contractor registered in one city is not automatically authorized to pull permits in the next, and the review process, fee schedule, and inspection scheduling change with the address.

  • Each city runs its own building division, with its own review process, fee schedule, and inspection scheduling
  • Boulder County permitting applies to unincorporated areas, not to work inside the cities and towns
  • A contractor registered in one city is not automatically authorized to pull permits in the next
  • Erie straddles two counties, so the jurisdiction depends on which side of the line the property sits
  • Gunbarrel is unincorporated, which routes permitting through the county rather than a city

None of that is exotic. It is just the local knowledge that separates a realistic timeline from an optimistic one, and it is why we check the current standard against your specific address rather than quoting from memory. You can see the full list of communities we build in if you want to check whether we cover yours.

The Standard

What Every Client Gets, Whatever the Project

The scope changes from job to job. A basement is not a kitchen and a tenant finish is not a custom home. What does not change is the sequence.

  • A walkthrough of the actual space before anything is quoted
  • Permits pulled and approved before construction starts, on every project
  • A straight answer about what the project actually takes
  • Protection for the parts of your home we are not working in
  • A punch list walked together, with every system tested
  • A deep clean before the keys come back to you

That last one is not a courtesy wipe-down. It is a step in the process, every time, so you walk into a finished space instead of a construction site.

Whether the project is a room or a whole-house renovation, something built from the ground up, or a tenant finish with a lease date attached, it runs the same order.

Credentials

Licensed, Insured, and Accountable

Colorado does not issue a statewide general contractor license, which means licensing is set locally rather than by the state. Ask any contractor to show you theirs before you sign, and ask whether it covers the jurisdiction your project is in.

  • License Class B General Building Contractor, covering residential structures from basement finishes through ground-up new construction
  • Insurance General liability to $1,000,000 per occurrence
  • Warranty One-year workmanship warranty on every project. If something breaks because of how the work was done, we come back and fix it free
  • Experience Over 300 projects completed in 24 years in the trade. Company founded 2018

Those four things are the floor, not the differentiator. Plenty of contractors can produce a license and a certificate of insurance. What happens after something goes wrong is where the difference shows up, and that is what the warranty is for.

How We Work

Four Things We Do Differently

None of these are complicated. They are just the parts most contractors skip when they are busy, and the parts clients notice when they are not there.

You get the scope before you get a price

We walk the space, tell you what the work actually involves, and put the scope in writing before a number is attached to it. No pressure to decide on the spot, and no surprise line items once the walls are open.

Permits before hammers, every time

Not because it is faster. Because a stop-work order halfway through costs far more than waiting for the approval did, and because unpermitted work follows the house to closing.

A limited number of projects at a time

We are not the cheapest builder in the county and we do not try to be. Taking on fewer jobs is the only way each one gets real attention rather than a crew split three ways.

One team, not a list of numbers

Architects, engineers, and every trade get coordinated by us. You deal with one contract and one point of contact instead of managing a construction project on top of your actual job.

If you want to see how that plays out on an actual project, the work itself is the better argument.
